I beat a month-long writer’s block in 24 minutes

Hello! Good afternoon (or morning, depending on where you are)!

Quick little update: I got my first read-through back from my editor (!!!) and I had a meeting about book names (double yay!). I’m already poking at a few other secret things behind the scenes, but first — tea about the last month:

I hit a wall. Big writer’s-block energy. For over a month I did everything except write. I organized my closet, cleaned things I didn’t know needed cleaning, and gave the dogs a bath. Nothing worked. Then one afternoon I went for a walk, put on some movie scores, and *cue the little cinematic moment* it just clicked. I RAN home, RAN, and scrabbled everything down. That tiny burst of music and fresh air snapped it loose. Proof that you can’t force the good stuff; sometimes it shows up when it wants to, and you just have to be there to catch it.

Reading through the edits made me stupidly happy. Like, me + my brain + these pages created this thing. Not to toot my own horn, but I fell back in love with the story and wanted to jump into that world and live there for a while.

Should I tell you what my editor said? I’m not sure I can, but I won’t give too much away… here’s a tiny taste: “Compelling and full of surprises — even readers who spot the structure won’t see everything coming.” — my editor

On a less sparkly note: there’s been a lot of indie-author drama lately (if you know, you know). It’s wild how quickly people can turn on someone online. I always try to remember there are usually more sides to any story, and I hope the noise doesn’t scare readers away from indie books. So many gems come from small presses and indie writers; I don’t want a moment of messy internet to dim that.

Also, also, I updated my website! Would love to know what you think!

A little inspiration before I go: creativity isn’t linear. There will be days where you make nothing and days where you make everything. Keep showing up for the tiny things- the walk, the song, the stupid little notebook- and trust that the story will find its way back to you.

With love,

McKenna ♡
